3.1 million war dead.
Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Japan's peace and prosperity today is based on the honorable sacrifices of people who lost their lives in the war.He said Japanese citizens should work to revive their country through efforts to restore communities devastated by the quake, tsunami and nuclear accident in March last year, in part for the sake of those who perished in the war.
At noon, the participants offered a one-minute silent prayer for the dead. The Emperor said he hopes that the horror of war will never be repeated. He paid tribute to the war-dead and said he prays for world peace and Japan's prosperity.
About 69 percent of this year's participants are in their 70s or older. The participants offered chrysanthemum flowers at the altar and prayed that the souls of the war dead will rest in peace.
